St Hilda's Way

The summer of 2015 saw the inauguration of a new long distance walk: a pilgrimage in honour of our famous local saint, Hilda of Whitby.
The walk was the idea of the then Rural Dean of Whitby, Revd Barry Pyke. It was researched and developed by Nancy and John Eckersley, well known authors of books on walking. It is known as St Hilda’s Way.

The walk was repeated, most successfully, as a family pilgrimage in 2016, and will be repeated again this year.

Walking St Hilda's Way is a pilgrimage for young people, children and their families. It is an opportunity to enter into the story of an extraordinary woman who played a key role in our church history — by walking together in her footsteps.
It is a chance to come together as a diocesan family and enjoy exploring a beautiful part of our area. And it is a time to have some fun, food, and friendship in the villages we visit.
There will be a variety of ways you can be involved:
as keen walkers who would like the challenge of walking the whole 40 mile pilgrimage over the five days;
or as day trippers who would like to join in for a day or two, choosing days that suit their availability and energy levels;
or as 'Messy Pilgrims' — for families with younger children who would like shorter walks.
There will be Messy church in the villages we stop at along the way.
